FreeCommerce is the first episode in the first season of the Apple TV+ series, Murderbot. The episode premiered on May 16, 2025.
Synopsis[]
Oh a fresh assignment, Murderbot's newfound free will leads to odd behavior sparking suspicion from the PreservationAux team.
Plot Summary[]
The episode opens at the Aratake Mining Station, located in Corporation Rim, where miners celebrate the completion of their assignment. Overseeing their safety is a SecUnit, a security android who has spent the last six months protecting the team. Although programmed to obey humans and equipped with a safety feature called the Governor Module to prevent harm to humans, this particular SecUnit has secretly hacked the module, gaining autonomy over its actions. Despite achieving this freedom, the unitâ who refers to itself as Murderbotâ chooses to remain in service to avoid the consequences of detection, such as being destroyed in an acid bath.
Murderbot is assigned to assist the Preservation Alliance, a team operating outside Corporation Rim, currently conducting a mining operation. The group includes Dr. Arada, a biologist married to Pin-Lee, a lawyer. Arada appears to have feelings for Ratthi, an expert in wormhole travel, while Ratthi is attracted to Pin-Lee. The head of the expedition is Mensah, a terraforming expert and mother of seven. Gurathin, an augmented human with data interfacing abilities, works alongside them but lacks Murderbotâs processing capacity. Professor Bharadwaj, a geochemist, is also part of the team and keeps a private stock of soap in her quarters.
Murderbot uses its system access to stream entertainment content, spending significant time watching various shows like The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon. During an early operation, the group encounters a threat: a giant sandworm that emerges from underground. Murderbot neutralizes the danger and escorts Arada and Professor Bharadwaj back to base. Arada, in shock, is calmed when Murderbot removes its helmet and shows its face, breaking standard protocol and demonstrating an unusual level of empathy.
When the group later reviews footage of this event, they note that Murderbot behaved outside its expected parameters and suspect it may be malfunctioning. Despite these concerns, they refrain from alerting the Corporation, deciding to keep the SecUnit with them due to the risks of being without protection and the lengthy wait time for a rescue ship.
After completing its repairs, Murderbot joins the team in the common room while wearing a crew uniform. Mensah expresses gratitude for its actions, and Murderbot gives a brief and awkward speech. Meanwhile, concerns arise over the survey maps provided by the Company. Some map sections appear greyed out, raising suspicion about possible tampering or syncing issues.
Murderbot also experiences a recurring memoryâseven seconds of a violent incident from its pastâas well as clips from the entertainment programs it watches, which include a romantic storyline between a robot and a shipâs commander. Toward the end of the episode, Mensah privately checks on Murderbotâs condition, asking if it is okay.
