Synopsis[]
Murderbot deals with fallout and detects a critical threat. In hopes of evading danger, the team heads to a new locale full of surprises.
Plot Summary[]
In a flashback, set at Port FreeCommerce one month prior, on the eve of the Chatterjee memorial lecture Gurathin confesses that he was previously a corporate spy assigned to observe Mensah and that he is tired of living a lie. He reveals this as the reason for his transfer to the Preservation Alliance and admits he has contemplated ending his life. Outside the event, he expresses doubts about the upcoming expedition and about working alongside a SecUnit.
In the present, the Preservation Alliance is still processing the aftermath of Leebeebee’s death. Murderbot urges the group to move and adopts a more diplomatic approach than before, which proves effective. The group departs the base aboard the hopper, though concerns remain about whether Murderbot can be trusted. Murderbot also considers leaving or simply watching Sanctuary Moon until its power runs out.
Eventually, the group and Murderbot address their tensions. Mensah tells Murderbot that she views it as someone genuinely trying to help and wishes it would see the team in the same light. Their discussion is interrupted when the hopper becomes surrounded by large creatures that appear to be mating rather than acting aggressively. Gurathin and Murderbot suggest electrifying the hull to drive the creatures away, but the human team refuses.
The creatures leave numerous eggs on the ship. A hostile SecUnit arrives, jamming Murderbot’s threat assessment. When the new SecUnit destroys some of the eggs, one of the large creatures retaliates, killing the SecUnit by tearing off its head. The creature then retrieves the eggs and disappears underground, leaving the Preservation team unharmed.
Following the incident, Gurathin collapses, and the team decides to return him to the habitat despite the risks of hostile presence in the area.
