A novella or short novel is a work of narrative prose fiction, longer than a short story but shorter than a novel. Publishers and literary award societies typically consider a novella's word count to be between 15,000 and 40,000 words, although definitions vary. (Wikipedia)
In a TOR.com interview[1] (based on a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" thread[2]), Martha Wells notes, "I originally meant for All Systems Red to be a short story, but the story needed to be longer. After Tor.com Publishing bought it for their novella line, they wanted more novellas and I wanted to write more about the character, so it became a novella series."
Pricing[]
In this interview she also explains, "Though the novellas were published by Tordotcom, after All Systems Red, Tor Books took over the distribution, and put them into hardcover to get them into more bookstores and into libraries, and set them at the hardcover price point. I didn't have any input or control over that decision. I have had to remove my contact information from my website because of angry people sending me obscenity-laden diatribes about it."
So please, no hate for the author over the pricing of the novellas.
